Who wins the Scudetto? Unpacking one of the best Serie A title races in years

As we reach the midpoint of the European football season, the Serie A title race is heating up. It promises a thrilling conclusion to one of the most exciting campaigns in recent memory – one that is proving hard to call in the sports betting odds in Italy and around the continent. The competition for the Scudetto is fiercer than ever, with multiple teams battling it out at the top of the table, each determined to etch their name into the history of Italian football.

This season has been a spectacle for Serie A fans. The league has shifted away from predictable outcomes, transforming into one of Europe’s most competitive domestic leagues. The days of one-sided dominance are gone, and the fight for the championship is more open than it has been in years.

A key factor in this shift has been the end of Juventus’ era of dominance, which saw the Bianconeri claim nine consecutive titles between 2012 and 2020. In the past five seasons, Serie A has crowned a different champion each year, a testament to the league’s increasing unpredictability.

In this article, we unpack the contenders in this captivating Scudetto race, examining how each team has positioned themselves to challenge for the title.

    Napoli

The 2023 Serie A champions are looking to reclaim their crown after such a long wait, this time under Antonio Conte’s leadership.

Conte’s arrival has brought renewed energy to a team that suffered the worst title defence in Serie A history last season.

At the time of writing, Napoli leads the league, thanks to Conte’s ability to instil a winning mentality and tactical clarity.

However, the potential loss of star winger Khvicha Kvaratskhelia, who has verbally agreed to join Paris Saint Germain, could prove a significant setback.

Despite this, Napoli’s squad depth and Conte’s proven track record in Italian football keep them firmly in the title conversation.

    Inter Milan

Inter Milan, the reigning Scudetto holders, remain one of the best-drilled teams in Europe under Simone Inzaghi’s guidance.

Last season, the Nerazzurri cruised to the title with a blend of tactical organisation and attacking flair. Their strike force, led by the prolific Lautaro Martinez and Marcus Thuram, is among the most dangerous in the league.

With an experienced dressing room and a squad capable of grinding out results, the champions are well-positioned to defend their title and secure back-to-back Italian titles.

    Atalanta

Often overlooked, Atalanta are proving to be a force to reckon with. Under Gian Piero Gasperini, the Bergamo-based side have built on their Europa League triumph last season, when they defeated Liverpool and Bayer Leverkusen on their way to the trophy.

Atalanta have made the Atleti Azzurri ground a fortress, and few teams relish the prospect of playing there. Joint second with Inter in the league at the time of writing, they have a genuine shot at a historic domestic coup.

    Lazio

Lazio have emerged as the dominant force in the Italian capital, capitalising on Roma’s struggles to establish themselves as contenders.

Marco Baroni’s side has shown their attacking prowess, scoring goals with ease, but defensive frailties remain a concern.

Recent results, including a 2-0 loss to Roma and a draw against Como, underline the need for greater consistency. If they can shore up their backline, Lazio has the quality to push for the title in what could be their best season in years.

    Juventus

Once the perennial champions of Italy, Juventus now find themselves as outsiders in the Scudetto race.

New boss Thiago Motta has embarked on a rebuilding project in Turin, clearing out several big names, including Federico Chiesa, Moise Kean, and Alex Sandro, during the summer.

While this squad overhaul has left the Old Lady short on experience, it has provided opportunities for younger players to step up. Juventus may not be favourites, but their history of rising to the occasion means they cannot be entirely ruled out of contention.
