    Balochistan, Pakistan, March 13, 2025

Pakistani security forces successfully ended a harrowing hostage crisis after militants from the Baloch Liberation Army (BLA) hijacked the Jaffar Express in Balochistan. The attack, which lasted over 27 hours, resulted in the deaths of 21 hostages, four security personnel, and all 33 attackers.

    The Hijacking Incident

The Jaffar Express, travelling from Quetta to Peshawar, was ambushed near the Mashkaf Tunnel on March 11. The heavily armed militants damaged railway tracks and fired rockets, forcing the train to stop. More than 450 passengers were on board when the attack occurred.

The assailants executed several soldiers on board and took around 214 passengers hostage. Later, they demanded the release of political prisoners and threatened to kill hostages if authorities did not comply.

    Security Forces’ Swift Response

The Pakistani military immediately launched a large-scale rescue operation, deploying special forces, troops, and air support. However, the rugged terrain and the militants’ strategic positioning in the tunnel made the mission complex. Some attackers were also wearing suicide vests, further complicating efforts.

After hours of intense combat, security forces neutralised all 33 militants and rescued most of the hostages. Tragically, 21 hostages and four security personnel lost their lives. The survivors were taken to Quetta for medical assistance and trauma support.

    Motive Behind the Attack

The BLA, a separatist group, has been engaged in an armed insurgency against the Pakistani government for years. The group claims that its actions are a response to what it sees as the exploitation of Balochistan’s resources. The hijacking of the Jaffar Express is one of the deadliest incidents in the region in recent years, highlighting ongoing security challenges.

    Government Response and Public Reaction

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif strongly condemned the attack, promising to take decisive action against militant groups. “Terrorism will not be tolerated, and those responsible will face the full force of the law,” he stated.

The attack has sparked nationwide outrage, with calls for enhanced security measures on Pakistan’s railway network. Many citizens demand stronger surveillance and protection for travellers, especially in regions prone to insurgent activity.

    Survivors’ Accounts

Passengers who endured the attack described the terror of being trapped inside the tunnel. The train driver recounted how militants executed security personnel and threatened civilians. “We were helpless, waiting for either rescue or death,” he said.

Many survivors and families of victims are receiving psychological support as they process the traumatic experience. Humanitarian groups have stepped in to assist.

    The Road Ahead

Following the attack, authorities are ramping up counterterrorism efforts in Balochistan. The government will reinforce security measures along railway routes by increasing surveillance and deploying more military personnel. It has assured the public its commitment to protecting passengers in conflict-prone regions.

    Conclusion

The Jaffar Express hijacking underscores the persistent threat of insurgency in Pakistan. While security forces successfully rescued hostages, the tragic loss of lives highlights the urgent need for more potent counterterrorism strategies. The incident serves as a reminder that Pakistan must remain vigilant to prevent such attacks in the future.
